Eczema is an umbrella term for a group of inflammatory skin conditions that result in patches of red, itchy, dry skin. There are several types of eczema, including atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema, nummular eczema, stasis and seborrheic dermatitis. Allergists primarily diagnose and treat atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, dyshidrotic and nummular eczema. Atopic dermatitis (AD) commonly occurs in childhood at the same time as other allergic conditions such as food allergy, asthma, and nasal allergies. An allergist is uniquely trained and qualified to take care of all these conditions in one clinic. AD tends to be a lifelong condition that can go away for years before coming back. Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) can occur at any point in someone’s life but tends to happen more in adults. With allergic contact dermatitis, the rash is caused by a substance like a chemical, preservative, metal, medication, or dye. To diagnose allergic contact dermatitis, allergists offer patch testing.

Get Relief From Eczema
Are you frustrated with severe, recurrent flares of eczema? Or are you interested in seeing whether or not something you are coming in contact with is driving your eczema? Or are you tired of using steroid creams that don’t seem to work or cause rebound flares? If so, then you should see an allergist like Dr. Brian Modena at Modena Allergy + Asthma. An allergist, through a careful investigation and allergy patch testing, can help you identify both triggers and drivers of your eczema. If avoidance and non-medicinal therapies are not successful, our team of experts can offer the latest and best therapies.
In the past, we were very dependent on steroids to treat moderate and severe eczema. Not only are steroids not that effective for severe eczema, but they can also lead to chronic skin changes and a rebound flare when a person stops using them. However, several new highly effective treatments have come to market in the past few years, and the treatment for eczema has improved dramatically. Patients today with moderate-to-severe eczema often get off steroids altogether.
Stop the itching, and stop the rashes
Prior to your first visit, it is important that Modena Allergy + Asthma has access to and reviews any medical visit notes, labs, or imaging that you have done in the past. This information will greatly enrich the conversation between yourself and the doctor and speed up the work-up process. Meaning that you may get your diagnosis earlier and start your San Diego eczema treatment sooner. We ask all patients to sign a Medical Release Form, which will be sent to your email address. After you sign the document, we will fax the request and work with your outside doctor’s office to obtain your records.
Then Dr. Modena and his team will start a careful investigation of your symptoms, including the time frame and location of the rash, any personal products that you regularly use, your occupation, topical therapies or other medications you have tried, labs and biopsies previously performed, and any of history of other allergic conditions, such as food allergy, nasal/eye allergies, or asthma. We will also want to know about any other triggers of eczema, such as stress, poor sleep, or use of alcohol. The Modena Allergy team will often recommend allergy patch testing, which can help you identify the drivers of your eczema. If avoidance and non-medicinal therapies are not successful, we can offer the latest systemic therapies for eczema treatment, such as Dupixent, Xeljanz, or Rinvoq.
It depends on the person, and many other factors, such as the severity of eczema, whether or not there is an allergic contact reaction and whether the culprit agent has been completely removed, and the extent of chronic skin changes. For those with allergic contact dermatitis, it typically takes several weeks for the rash to resolve even after the person has stopped using or being exposed to the culprit agent.
For those with hyperpigmentation or nodules (i.e. prurigo nodularis) caused by months or years of severe eczema, it often takes months for these to resolve. But for patients that follow the instructions of avoidance and/or treatment recommendations, most find significant relief right away or in the first week or so.
